Position Overview
Park Construction Company, a regional Highway/Heavy contractor established in Minneapolis, is searching for a full-time experienced Superintendent within our Commercial Division. Park works throughout the Midwest. The right person will demonstrate a high safety standard, and ability to work in a team environment.

Job Purpose:

The Superintendent is responsible for the day-to-day operations and the timely completion of the project and ensuring that the project is constructed in strict accordance with plans, specifications, and local codes. The Superintendent is expected to lead crew production, project schedule, quality control, cost management, and safety for job site.  Teaming with the Estimator, Project Manager, General Superintendent on construction cycle of job is critical. 

Essential Duties and Position Responsibilities:

  • Schedule subcontractors, consultants, and vendors in critical path to ensure timely completion.
  • Participate in preconstruction planning regarding project schedules and budgets.
  • Ensure a complete knowledge and understanding of all contract drawings, specifications, addenda, RFIs (requests for information) and any other job-related contracts and information for each project.
  • Job site setup and startup to include safety posting and procedures, security practices, field office location and layout, temporary utilities, staging areas, equipment, and manpower.
  • Opening the jobsite at beginning of the day and securing the jobsite at the end of the day.
  • Perform quality control duties and responsibilities regarding the work being performed.
  • Ensure that subcontractor is fully executing and complying with his contracted scope of work.
  • Coordinate required inspections with local jurisdictions.
  • Identify subcontractor non-compliance with safety, health, and environmental quality standards.
  • Identify conflicts in construction progress and communicate them to project team for resolution.
  • Maintain daily log (written) of activities on the jobsite.
  • Perform Superintendent duties at multiple job sites, simultaneously.
  • Ensure subcontractor has corrected all deficiencies identified by project team.
  • Walk all units on project daily to monitor activities and assist in future planning.
  • Enter production quantities, employee time, equipment usage into field management software daily.
  • Ensure compliance with company equipment protocol, inspections, maintenance request, and usage reporting.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience in Supervisory role.
  • Demonstrated experience in safe work practices of building demolition, excavation, site grading, foundation excavation & backfill, and finish grading of private & public site work projects.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret Construction Plans and Specifications.
  • Ability to layout, stake, measure the work to be placed (GPS experience preferred).
  • Strong leadership and planning skills. Ability to mentor, train, and develop crew members.
  • Strong site management skills including the ability to schedule, coordinate self-performed and subcontractor tasks.
  • Strong analysis, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. Self-starter, quick to learn.

Essential Duties and Position Responsibilities:

  • Directs activities of workers engaged in the operation of mass excavation equipment for the construction of highways, mining reclamation, site development and other company projects.
  • Demonstrates a proactive rather than a reactive approach to the construction process.

  • Studies project specifications with project superintendent to plan sequencing and schedule for grading and excavation.

  • Sets grade and slope stakes, communicates cut and fill depths to crew members.

  • Confers with superintendent to resolve complaints and grievances within work force, subcontractors and owners.
  • Confers with supervisory and engineering personnel and inspectors to resolve construction problems and improve construction methods.
  • Sequences excavation to reduce inference with other project activities and traveling public.
  • Continually inspects work site surveying for potential hazards or safety concerns.
  • Establish safe work environment that complies with OSHA standards and company safety program.

  • Read and interpret plans and specifications, in preparation for bid submittal.
  • Prepare bid submittal costs using HCSS Heavy Bid.
  • Participate in bid review and bid closing to ensure accuracy of bid and evaluate project feasibility and risks.
  • Manage daily project costs using Heavy Job.
  • Perform accurate project revenue and cost financial forecasting to ensure project profitability.
  • Facilitate job hand-off with Field Operations.
  • Ensure proper job controls, i.e. quantities, costs, revenue and schedule.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with owners, agencies, subcontractors, inspectors.
  • Ensure accurate construction reports for the job allowing for continuous improvement in performance.
  • Manage projects at profitability levels to meet or exceed expected margins.

Education / Experience

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • College or technical education preferred.
  • 3 years previous experience in bidding, estimating, project coordination or field management preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in paving, dirt, and grading with proven track record.
  • Asphalt Paving experience.
  • Must possess strong organization, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Progressive project experience within public and heavy civil markets.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of construction in paving, utility, concrete and grading practices.
  • Knowledge of MnDOT Specifications

  • Lead and coordinate the entire estimating effort to assigned bids.
  • Download, file, print, scan, organize, and maintain bid documents.
  • Maintain and follow bid calendar.
  • Attend weekly bid schedule meetings.

  • Review bid documents to determine bid scope/items.

  • Solicit, review, and select vendors and subcontractors.
  • Review geo-technical reports, specifications and drawings. Ensure bid conformance with bid documents and local regulations.
  • Perform detailed and accurate quantity takeoffs for project estimates, change orders, and pricing options.
  • Work with senior management, estimators, project managers, and field superintendents to identify advantages and the most effective means and methods to build the job.
  • Understand and embrace teamwork, partnership, and the best value approach.
  • Represent the company in project meetings, project negotiations/strategy meetings, etc.
  • Assist Project Manager with all aspects of the project from start to completion and closeout.
  • Accurately project and forecast the cost of work to be completed on active projects.
  • Accountable for making decisions and recommendations which can greatly affect profitability of assigned area.
  • Authorize/approve project transactions, billings, subcontractor requisitions, material purchases, change requests, etc.
  • Take responsibility for project management to ensure a successful outcome for customers and the company.
  • Maintain high level of service, safety, quality, and integrity upon which our business has been built.
  • Manages costs by tracking labor and materials.
  • Manages billing, with Project Coordinators, to ensure accuracy of invoicing, preparation of payables, accounts receivable collections, approval of accounts payable in a timely manner and management of over/under billing on a monthly basis.
  • Prepare, submit, maintain, and file required project documents (RFI’s, Change Orders, Submittals, Purchase Orders, Subcontracts, etc.). Manage document control.
  • Embrace, support, and uphold Park Construction’s policies and guidelines.
  • Foster, create, and uphold client relationships.
  • Reports to Division Manager. Takes work assignments from Project Managers and Estimators as necessary.

  • Reviews the plans and financial projections for the job to ensure that they are accurate and reasonable on a day to day basis.

  • Responsible for implementing the company’s Quality Control Program to ensure all of the project’s specification requirements are met or exceeded.
  • Responsible for the implementation of the project site specific safety program to include conducting daily and weekly safety meetings, conducting daily, weekly and monthly safety audits, accident investigation and new hire safety orientation.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Accredited Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering or at least seven years of construction experience as a Quality Control Manager and/or foreman or superintendent or a combination of the both education and experience.
  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • Capability to multi-task (phones and computer work).
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook), Construction Data Management Software such as HCSS Heavy Job, Scheduling Software and Bidding Software such as HCSS Heavy Bid.
  • Proficient in Accounting principles and software such as VISTA.
  • Knowledge of the Construction Plans and Specifications.
  • Knowledge of the laws pertaining to Storm Water Management.
  • Knowledge of the Quality Control Principles used in the Construction Industry.

  • Proven ability to work on multiple projects with competing demands to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to prepare bid proposals with a high level of accuracy.
